This Boatswains Pipe is made to the original Acme design of 1870, and has the same markings as those used by the Royal Navy during 1916 and the Battle of Jutland. Originally used for giving commands to crew the high pitched notes can be heard even over gale conditions. Now largely ceremonial, it is the only pipe used for competition piping or officially approved. Each pipe is hand tuned to provide the full range of notes. Each pipe is made by the same company, Hudson Whistles, that produced the Boatswains Pipe for the Royal Navy during the First World War.
