Falklands 40 Hermes Pin

Britain and The Falklands

On 2 April 1982 Argentine forces invaded the Falklands Islands, and by the 5 April, the British government had dispatched a taskforce under the flagship HMS Hermes.

The taskforce had reached the Falklands by the start of May and on the 2 May the Royal Navy submarine HMS Conqueror sank the Argentinian cruiser ARA General Belgrano. The taskforce remained stationed off the Falklands, under the leadership of HMS Hermes, and under constant threat from the Argentine air force. This was demonstrated on 4 May when the destroyer HMS Sheffield was hit with an Exocet missile and sank, it was one of several warships lost.   The conflict lasted 74 days and ended with an Argentine surrender on 14 June, returning the islands to British control.

In the 40th anniversary year of the Falklands War we remember the service and sacrifice of those who fought to liberate the islands and the role played by HMS Hermes in leading the taskforce.

We have created a commemorative collection including this very special pin using HMS Hermes metals, skillfully made by Icarus Originals.

Icarus Originals are a UK based company who specialise in generating awareness, supporting aircraft restoration projects and charitable causes through the production of giftware and collectibles made using surplus airframe materials.

They are co-founded and jointly owned by two individuals with extensive service backgrounds: John Mercer is an RAF officer with over 20 years of service with extensive spells working in support of the Tornado aircraft. The company was initially founded to commemorate the Tornado GR4 following its retirement from service and ensure that all those individuals with a connection to the aircraft were able to own a legitimately (and commercially), sourced piece of the aircraft whilst raising funds for good causes. Alan Lock was a member of the RAF University Air Squadron before embarking on a career as a commissioned officer in the RN. After losing his eyesight in service, Alan was medically retired but remains a proud ambassador for Blind Veterans UK and X-Forces and has completed several noteworthy challenges including rowing the Atlantic, conquering the Poles as well as swimming the English Channel.

Metals acquired from the HMS Hermes were approved for Icarus Originals to use to create this pin by the MOD and, using their skills, they have produced these pins to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Falklands War.

Each pin includes a certificate dedicated to a serviceman or woman who lost their lives during the conflict.
