This Spitfire Coin pays tribute to two of the most iconic names in Royal Air Force history - the Supermarine Spitfire and the RAF Biggin Hill Airfield, both of which were so vital during the Battle of Britain in 1940, and the Second World War in general.

Without any doubt, the Spitfire is the most famous British fighter aircraft in history. In use shortly before the Second World War, it became the main RAF fighter aircraft from 1941 onward, and remained with fighter squadrons until the early 1950s.  RAF Biggin Hill became a military landing ground in 1917 and was developed over time to become one of the most important airfields due to its location south of London.  Consequently it was one of the most targeted airfields during WWII and particularly during the Battle of Britain when the Germans realised how beneficial it would be to reduce interception coming from here during their raids.

This wonderful collectable coin features a spitfire silhouette made from aluminium skinning from Spitfire Mk Vb "AB910", which currently serves with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.  For a period of her career from May 1942, “AB” was based at Biggin Hill with No. 133 Eagle Squadron formed from American volunteers serving with the RAF.  The coin is backed with a traditional roundel incorporating earth obtained from one of the remaining fighter aircraft blast pens at Biggin Hill.  The earth was dried, ground down to a fine powder and added to the red enamel in the centre of the roundel.

Comes in a beautiful RBL presentation case and certificate of origin detailing the history.
