Dame Vera Lynn Crystal Pearl Brooch

Dame Vera Lynn Crystal Pearl Brooch

Inspired by the late Dame Vera Lynn, the Royal British Legion has worked closely with her daughter, Virginia Lewis-Jones, to design this crystal and pearl poppy brooch. The crystal heart in the centre of the brooch symbolises love, family, friendships and reunion, and her love for pearls has been captured in the detailed edging of the poppy petals. The brooch is also engraved on the reverse with the words ‘We’ll Meet Again’, from her iconic song. We have also developed a Dame Vera Lynn jewellery collection which, not only features hearts and pearls, but also the well-known bluebird motif!

Virginia recalls, “My mother never left her wartime roots behind. She continued to work with and support veterans and military charities, including the Royal British Legion throughout her life, so it was important to capture the essence of my mother and pay tribute to her own service in this collection. That’s why each piece features a miniature Bluebird or a reference to one of my mother’s iconic songs.

DAME VERA LYNN
1917 - 2020

Dame Vera Lynn CH DBE LLD M.mus. was born Vera Margaret Welch on 20 March 1917 in East Ham, Essex (now the London Borough of Newham). From a very young age Dame Vera was a natural performer, starting her singing career in Working Men’s Clubs at age seven. By the age of 11 she had joined a kids’ touring music hall troupe and adopted her maternal grandmother Margaret's maiden name ‘Lynn’ as her stage name. At just 22 years old she had sold more than a million records, bought her parents a house and a car for herself.

But it was during the Second World War that her reputation really took off. Dame Vera volunteered to work during the war and was advised that the best thing she could do was continue to be an entertainer. She became known as The Forces’ Sweetheart; an anthem of hope and resilience during the war, singing to the troops and reminding them of home and their loved ones. Some of her well-known songs, including We’ll Meet Again and The White Cliffs of Dover, boosted the mood of the nation, as well as the troops.

In 1975 Vera was made a Dame, and in 2000 she was named as the Briton who best exemplified the spirit of the 20th Century.

Vera never left her wartime roots behind and remained close to the troops she had got to know, continuing to work with and support veterans and military charities, including the Royal British Legion.

In 2009, at the age of 92, Dame Vera became the oldest living artist to have a number one album in the U.K. with We’ll Meet Again: The Very Best of Vera Lynn, knocking the Arctic Monkey’s off the top spot! Eight years later she became the oldest living artist to have an album in the top ten in the British charts with 100, which featured reorchestrations of her classic hits and was released in honour of her 100th birthday.
